Home Security Summer Tips

Many people like to travel during the summer seasons. Whether you are traveling to a close beach for the day or leaving town for a longer period of time, when you return home you would like to see exactly as you have left it. Keeping your home protected by taking a few security precautions can save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Some folks may already know this, but if you were uncertain we are here to let you know you should always have a local locksmith change all locks and tumblers when moving into a new house or apartment. While it may be a little more difficult to protect your home from professional thieves, taking preventative measures will ensure that your home will be kept safe and sound when you are not around and will minimize the potential of having unwelcomed visitors break into your home.

To ensure your family and home is safe it’s always a great idea to have a security professional install security cameras and keypads in your home. Security cameras act as a double precaution to help ward off burglars. The most effective alarm system will have all wires concealed. Most burglars will look for these wires where they can disconnect the security system and disable it. If your home has a faulty alarm system that frequently goes off you should get it repaired right away. You should also inform your trusted neighbors once your alarm system has been fixed as people usually ignore a siren if they hear it periodically on a regular basis. If your home has  long entrance ways before the front door you should consider installing spotlights and lighting with infrared detectors. This will not only help you see where you are going in the dark, but will also help keep thieves away. Most thieves do not want to be seen going in or coming out of their targeted location.

When going away on vacation you should never announce your whereabouts on online social sites. This is a gateway for robbers to know when you will be gone and when you will be coming back. Your home should appear to be occupied at all times, even when you are away on a vacation. This can be achieved by using timers for lights and radio which will simulate that someone is at home and burglars will most likely not break in when someone is home. We also recommend locking up your home even if you are only going out for a short time or across the street to a neighbor. Many unauthorized entries take place just by someone leaving their front door unlocked or window wide open for a short period of time. Last but not least having a sturdy solid door with a good set of high security locks will help prevent unauthorized entries.

Many times a spring-latch lock is easy prey for burglars that can easily loid doors. Loiding is a method in which any hard plastic card can be swiped against the latch tongue of the lock and unlock the door. This method is only successful when there is enough space between the door and the frame it is installed on. Having a high security deadbolt lock can prevent this from happening and help ensure your safety and security. A professional locksmith can assist you in installing one on your door.
